Ethics- documentary photography

I found this post about Ethical limits in documentary photography this is a great example on ethics when it come to documentary photography. it talks about Kevin Carters “Struggling Girl” as you can see it shows a very young starved child struggling with a vulture watch her. the post mentions the respons to the photograph being in the new york time and how the they could only say that the child was able to have the strengh to move not a respons that I would want to hear to be honest I would want to help the child.

Photographer's dilemma

Images of people in distress appear often in newspapers, on television and online. Many show ordinary people struggling against powerful, even life-threatening, forces. How do they happen? What choices did the photographer make in order to bring such dramatic images to the world's attention?

A photojournalist who had doubts for the first time in his professional life told the British Red Cross about his hard decisions. Follow his story as he explains how he knew he couldn't help – and had to think about whether to take pictures.

I found this articular on the red cross website it is a lesson plane but I found it to be interesting as I have always worried about what I would do if I was in a situation like this I don't think I could just stand their taking photos I would try to help to the best of my ability.

Here is an extract from the code of ethics of the US-based National Press Photographers Association.

Treat all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy. Intrude on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to see.

1. Normative ethics is the study of ethical action. It is the branch of philosophical ethics that investigates the set of questions that arise when considering how one ought to act, morally speaking.
2. 1. Metaethics is a branch of analytic philosophy that explores the status, foundations, and scope of moral values, properties, and words. Whereas the fields of applied ethics and normative theory focus on what is moral,metaethics focuses on what morality itself is.

Paul Hill

Paul Hill did a lecture on the 5th November 2014 

It was quite an interesting lecture as I only briefly looked at him before the lecture and I thought his work was very interesting as he goes from journalism to photographing landscapes to using his phone to photograph his life.

This photo was recently in The Gordian 22 October 2014 it features Paul Hill talking about the photo and how the man is yelling at the troops " what the hell is going on hear" he court the man as he was raising his arm. the man had gone in to the pub for a drink only to leave and see that the troops had arrived

this did give me an idea on what my portfolio should look like and what it should contain. some of the examples were really professional looking. but to be honest I found the presentation not as informative as I thought it would be.

Andrew Gill magic lantern show

Andrew Gill is a professional magic lantern showman. He presents authentic magic lantern shows and gives talks and seminars on Victorian optical entertainments.

Quite an interesting lecture based on Victorian optical entertainment he  goes through each of the types of optical entertainment from 1787 to pretty much the 1960's with Cinematography. I enjoyed the magic lantern show with the stories that he told while using the slides.

One optical entertainment that i liked was the zeotrope that was used in the  1830's.

 

 I liked the Zoetrope because they remind me of a night light that does a similar thing but instead of looking in you are looking at the shadows on the wall.
